Scavenger hunt is fun for team building and leisure event but planning for it can be very time consuming. Below please find some tips for you to plan for your hunt.
Step 1 – Choose your route
First, you need to decide the starting point and end point. Find a place that is spacious and comfortable so that you can do all the preparation work there such as briefing and game preparation. Second, you need to plan for the game duration. If time allows, you can plan for a hunt across different districts that require travelling with public transport. We believe that this will be more challenging and fun as the teams can plan for their strategies and routes with greater variability and flexibility.
On the contrary, if you have limited time, you can set the starting point and the end point at the same place and choose a relatively small area for your hunt.
Step 2 – Determine the checkpoints
Are there any interesting places or things to explore throughout your planned route? Do an online search and choose some unique spots for your checkpoints. These can be indoor or outdoor including tourist attractions, museum, parks, shopping malls, etc…
Step 3 – Determine the missions / games
First, you may need to think about the event objectives. Do you want to do a team building event? Or just a leisure event for fun? For team building, you can consider adding some game elements which can facilitate team collaboration. For fun event, you may add some funny games or missions that are memorable to the participants. Another criterion is the number of helpers and facilitators that are going to station at checkpoints. For complex game, you probably need a few more helpers to assist. If you have few helpers, choose some simple and easy missions such as taking pictures and collecting something at checkpoints.
Step 4 – Make the clue cards
Once you have the checkpoints and game missions, you can prepare the clue cards. I would recommend designing the clue cards in PowerPoint format for easy editing and review. Be creative in making your cards and put different themes and elements to enrich the game content. Don’t forget to assign scores to each mission based on the difficulties and complexity. The last step is to print the clue cards in papers / photos or to save as an electronic copy for distribution.
